Sustained studies

This took me about an hour to complete and I used conte crayon over my original drawing. I hoped to make the piece more narrative/abstract and illustrate a deeper meaning. I chose to eliminate the figures’ facial features in order to make them seem anonymous. I also added crayon to make the figures look as though they are standing in a dark room. I like how the figures work as a single piece rather than two separate people. I wish my shadowing was more consistent throughout the piece.

  1. It’s almost like two completely different drawings! I love what you’ve done to create this more finished looking conte drawing. You made some very good choices, such as creating ambiguous faces and overall creating a more tonal versus line drawing piece. I feel like I would have personally liked to see the thick black line outlining the figures to become a completely black background instead so the highlights on the figures really pop off the page.

  2. Saige, well done, I agree with Viola about extending the black “halo” although manipulating it a bit to make it appear as a strong shadow cast on the wall behind them might also be an option, (except that the right figure’s head is not illuminated so it would not cast a strong shadow and the light source in the drawing is a little confusing.
But the use of Conte to render the figures make for a more expressive and in a sense narrative drawing.
