Ella

Ella Stevens Portrait

Self-Portrait on 9×12 paper using colored pencils. 1.5-2 hours. I think this turned out okay, the proportions of most of the face are pretty accurate, but the forehead should be smaller and the chin is slightly too long and pointy, but I like highlights in this piece.

  1. I really love your use of color and how tone defines the nose/mouth area. It’s really nice to look at. I like how you used the color of the hair on the face, it keeps the hair from looking separated (sometimes when my stuff looks lego-like instead), I think also adding some tones from the skin to the hair could add some more dimension to it.

  2. Ella, this is a very effective and expressive drawing. I am having a little trouble reading the lights when they blend with the medium gray. The high lights are very effective as are the reflected lights. The portrait carries very well from a distance. In future drawings you might think of adding a few more darks, selectively. But good work overall.

  3. I really like the use of color in this. Specifically, I think the lips are done very well. Maybe there is opportunity in darkening some of the shading.
