Sianin

Sianin portrait

This is a portrait of my brother that I spent about 30 minutes on. I only used graphite because I was trying to get a feel for proportions and shading, but I think it would have been better to use something that I could do a little more with, especially for highlights since I just left those places unshaded. Overall I’m pretty happy with it, the likeness is pretty good and I think I successfully portrayed his facial expression. The proportions and facial features like the mouth could definitely be improved, and if I were to do it again I think I would have used a medium that I could have used to create more variety and make the drawing more interesting.

  1. I think you did a really good job with proportions and shading. I also like how you chose to emphasize the face as the focal point by marking the shirt with only a few simple lines. I think using a white pencil as well to up the highlights could be really cool.

  2. Sîanin, is this on newsprint? the photo is a little dark and it is hard to tell. I think it has a great deal of tonal range. One can do a lot with graphite and I think your choice of media is effective.

  3. I love the way that you captured this person’s expression. It makes the portrait very compelling and dramatic. Maybe try and bring darker values into the face to create even more dimension.
