Sofia Mottola Portrait

6x6in, graphite and ballpoint on paper. This took between 40-60 min. I’m not crazy about it, it looks pretty harsh, but I’m hoping that’s partly due to the medium.

  1. I love your use of line and execution of the medium! I think it gives the portrait a great life like or in motion quality. The eyes feel very stable to me though; a solid focal point. If that wasn’t really what you were going for, maybe it has to do with varying line weight and size? Good likeness too 🙂

  2. I love your line variation between the graphite and ballpoint, it makes the drawing really interesting to look at and the line movement gives it a lot of energy. I think the darkness of the eyes/eyebrows could be balanced by dark areas in other parts of the drawing, but it’s also kind of cool because it draws the attention to the eyes which makes it feel very expressive.

  3. Sofia, very expressive, the lines work, I like the intensity of the expression, quite typical of a self portrait. (do keep your guidelines in until you finish the features) Also when photographing your work try to do some corrections to the color or exposure or brightness to be sure what you post is what you drew.
Overall a very expressive and effective self-portrait.
