Turned Profile Sketches Straight Forward
Because of my frustration with the first portrait, I began sketching again and produced the next 3 images. All 3 are larger drawings done in my large sketch pad. The profile and the sketches are done in charcoal while the turned view is charcoal and conte crayon. The sketches took about 10 minutes. The profile view was about an hour. The turned view took me 3 hours. The turned view one is my favorite and I had a really fun time playing with the value. If I went back and changed something about it, I would make the eyes more round and less dark.
I really like the turned portrait, I think the focus on shadows and the overall dark appearance combined with the angle and facial expression makes it really emotive. The highlights in the hair are really nice in giving it dimension and lightening up the drawing.
The wispy black smudges around the figure really add an extra layer of expression! With the ominous grim and the overall dark colors, you did a great job in conveying emotion.
Jannell try a few drawings where you apply the darks and lights according to planar structure of the face. Also try some drawings with a raking light. Think about how you have to light an architectural model to show its 3d qualities and apply that same principle to your drawings. I like the drama of the profile but try not to have a dark line in between planes of the face, think of them as edges. I also think there is a nice likeness in the ¾ view.
